Le Moyne Wins D-II National Title
May 31, 2004
Le Moyne outlasts Limestone in
double overtime
BALTIMORE - The Le Moyne men's lacrosse team came from
behind to force overtime, and defeated Limestone 11-10
in double overtime to claim the college's first-ever
National Championship in any sport. The Dolphins finish
the season with a perfect 16-0 record, while the Saints
end the 2004 season with a 15-2 mark.
It was only the second time in NCAA Division II Championship
history in which the game has gone into overtime. The
only other championship game to go into overtime was
in 1974, a 18-17 Towson win over Hobart in double overtime.
Junior attack Brandon Spillett (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool)
scored seven goals and assisted on another to finish
the game with eight points. His seven goals ties him
for second in program history with goals in a game,
and surpasses his previous career-record of six goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jared Corcoran (Concord, N.H./Concord)
tied his career-high with 15 saves in the contest, 10
coming in the first half. Corcoran stopped two shots
in the opening overtime frame to force another overtime.
Limestone senior attack Jason Randolph (Arnold, Md./Broadneck)
scored a go-ahead goal with 1:11 remaining in regulation
to make the score 10-9. Senior midfielder Chris Barrett
(Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) was handed a one-minute
non-releasable unsportsmanlike conduct penalty right
after the goal, which gave Le Moyne the ball without
having to go to a face-off.
Le Moyne turned over the ball with 19 seconds remaining,
but junior attack Matt Holdridge (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham)
forced a turnover deep in Limestone's territory with
nine seconds remaining. Following a Le Moyne timeout,
Spillett drove to the goal and delivered the game-tying
goal with two seconds remaining to force overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Dolphins won
the second overtime face-off and called a timeout. Spillett
received a pass from sophomore midfielder Craig Rosecrans
(Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and got the ball past Saints
goalkeeper Charlie Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River)
while falling down to end the game at the 3:16 mark
of second overtime.
