DUKE's vs. Loyola Game Notes

Blue Devils stand at 3-1 on the
young season
The 10th-ranked Duke Blue Devils will play host to eighth-ranked
Loyola in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon
at Koskinen Stadium in Durham. Face-off is set for 1:00
p.m.
Duke enters the game at 3-1 following Tuesday's 17-5 win
over VMI. Loyola is 3-0 on the season with victories over
Delaware (9-6), Mount St. Mary's (10-3) and Hofstra (10-4).
DUKE NOTES
SCOUTING LOYOLA: The Greyhounds are led by Stephen
Brundage, who paces Loyola in scoring with 10 points
on six goals and four assists while Chris Summers has
scored a team-high seven goals ... Loyola goalkeeper
Mark Bloomquist is off to a good start in 2003 with a
4.33 goals against average and .690 save percentage
while Ryan Radonis has won 29-of-42 (.690) face-offs ...
Loyola went 9-4 a year ago as Brundage scored 46 points
on 26 goals and 20 assists ... The Greyhounds got off
to an impressive 7-0 start that included an 11-9 win over
Duke, but lost four of their last six games.
DUKE 17, VMI 5: This past Tuesday at Koskinen Stadium,
four Blue Devils - Kevin Brennan, Dan Flannery, Matt Monfett
and Matt Rewkowski - scored three goals apiece to lead
Duke past the Keydets of VMI, 17-5 ... The Keydets scored
the opening goal of the game, but the Blue Devils responded
with 14 consecutive goals ... Flannery added three assists
while Rewkowski assisted on two goals ... Will MacDonald
won 17-of-24 face-offs to aid the Duke cause while Glenn
Nick was credited with a team-high four ground balls.
DUKE PAIR CLOSES IN ON 100 POINTS: Two Blue Devil
seniors - Kevin Brennan and Kevin Cassese - are closing
in on 100 career points ... Entering today's game with
Loyola, Brennan has 96 career points (56 goals & 40
assists) while Cassese has amassed 93 career points (62
goals & 31 assists) ... Led by all-time leader scorer
Dave Hagler (254 points), Duke currently has 28 members
in its all-time 100-point club.

TEWAARATON TROPHY UPDATE: Duke's Kevin Cassese
is one of 16 nominees for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy
given annually to the nation's top player ... Syracuse's
Michael Powell, also a nomination this year, was honored
with the award in 2002 after scoring 84 points on 42 goals
and 42 assists and leading the Orangemen to the NCAA championship
... Joining Cassese, who was a finalist for the honor
in 2002, and Powell on the nomination list are Ryan Boyle
(Princeton), John Christmas (Virginia), Damien Davis (Princeton),
Adam Doneger (Johns Hopkins), Michael Howley (Maryland),
Tillman Johnson (Virginia), Kevin Leveille (Massachusetts),
Ryan McClay (Cornell), Tim McGinnis (Gettysburg), Mike
Mollot (Maryland), Michael Peyser (Johns Hopkins), Chris
Rotelli (Virginia), Mike Springer (Syracuse) and Kyle
Sweeney (Georgetown).
CASSESE HONORED BY ACC: Senior midfielder Kevin Cassese
has been named one of four recipients of a Weaver-James-Corrigan
Honorary Award by the Atlantic Coast Conference ... The
award recognizes students for their outstanding performance
both in athletic competition, as well as in the classroom
throughout their collegiate careers ... Other ACC student-athletes
who joined Cassese in winning the awards are Florida State's
Matthew Lynch (baseball), North Carolina's David Crawford
(soccer) and Virginia's Mirjana Bosevska (swimming)

LAST YEAR: On March 9, 2002 in Baltimore, Jim Fink
scored three goals and Stephen Brundage added two goals
and three assists as Loyola defeated Duke, 11-9 ... Kevin
Cassese and Matt Rewkowski each scored two goals for the
Blue Devils while Kevin Brennan had one goals and two
assists ... A.J. Kincel made 10 saves in the Duke net
while Loyola's Mark Bloomquist was credited for 11 saves.
TIME CHANGE: Please note that the start time for the Duke-Virginia
game on April 12 in Durham has changed from 1:00 p.m.
to 2:30 p.m.
