Johns Hopkins:
A convincing win over struggling Blue Devils
cements the Hop's #1 ranking. Five Blue Jays
with hat tricks plus. (Artful Dodger)
Anyone not have the Jays at #1 right now?
Everything clicked against Duke, setting up
showdown against Twerps under the lights down
in CP. (ColumbiaBlueBlack) The BEST.
(Laximus) #1 - Picked a good time to
put together their first full 60-minute game.
(timbucthree) Put on an offensive show
against an underachieving Duke team. It is
Kyle Barrie not John Christmas
who is, right now, the best attackman in the
country not named Powell. (VTD) Best
I have seen JHU play in almost 15 years. Barrie
is having a break-out year. Harrison's move
on the pole in the 4th was really sick. (WNY
Lax) No changes to my top 6 this week.
JHU remains at #1 with a convincing win over
Duke. The lax world must take notice now -
the Jays finally put together a full 60-minute
effort against a quality opponent. If they
can do that in each game in May, look out!
(Wombat)
Princeton: Princeton gets a breather
with an 11-goal win over a young Quinnipiac
team and should have clear sailing to the
Ivy crown. (Artful Dodger) #4 for same
reason Va is #3. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
Tigers have come a long way since the season
began. (Laximus) #4 - Should win out
the rest of their schedule in a cake walk.
(timbucthree) They're on cruise control
for the rest of the season. (VTD) All
they have to do is win Ivies and that is looking
more and more like a lock. (WNY Lax)
Stays at #2. A lighter week for the Tigers,
but they did put up two wins by easy margins.
The schedule looks a lot easier than their
first half, but there are many potential pitfalls
ahead if they take someone too lightly. (Wombat)
Virginia: Virginia seems to be cooking
on all burners with balanced scoring and stellar
goal tending. (Artful Dodger) Easiest
of all to slot at #3: lost to top 2, beat
the rest. (ColumbiaBlueBlack) #3 -
Back on the winning path after a good win
over a very solid UNC team. (timbucthree)
See what happens when Starsia allows
the 2nd midfield to see significant time?
He better keep that up before he runs Rotelli
and Shannon into the ground. (VTD)
Really, really miss Gill. A measure of how
excellent Gill was. (WNY Lax) Stays
at #5. Solid win over UNC. This team should
be scoring more than 10 a game, though, so
there are still issues with the offense. Needs
someone to step up and be the QB and generate
a lot of assists. (Wombat)
Maryland: Maryland should have had
a more convincing win over the Middies. This
team is too up and down for my liking. A win
over JHU next week could change my mind, but
right now my initial enthusiasm for this team
is waning. (Artful Dodger) #2, but
what to make of that home loss to Carolina?
Answer: At the beginning of the year, I thought
UNC would be a surprise. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
Best of the crazy ACC. (Laximus)
#2 - Given their record, it is difficult not
to rank MD this high. (timbucthree)
Slowing down the Hopkins offense will be no
easy task, even for a defense as star-studded
as this one. (VTD) Get JHU home and
an opportunity to gain top ranking. JHU EMO
is excellent so needless penalties will probably
cost. Great opportunity for Terps. (WNY Lax)
Stays at #4. Good win over Navy, and
now next up: JHU. Cottle will have the troops
fired up and will force the Jays to run the
gauntlet at the Byrd House of Terrapin Terror.
The Jays don't have a great record at Byrd
and don't play many games on grass, so next
week Maryland could jump all the way to #1
with a major upset of JHU. (Wombat)
Syracuse: The presence of Liam Banks
makes a big difference for the Orange as they
put Loyola in their rightful place. Those
who thought that Loyola could make a game
of it were quickly disabused of the notion.
Pfeifer bucks up his save percentage with
an .800 outing. (Artful Dodger) #5
seems about right with home losses to #3 and
#4 and no significant wins (yet) other than
1-goal game against JHU at home. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#5 - Solid win over a team (Loyola)
they should beat solidly. (timbucthree)
They killed Loyola, but who hasn't been doing
that this year? (VTD) Exposed the weaknesses
of LC like lack of depth. (WNY Lax)
Stays at #6 for now, which is low, but my
rank is based mainly on head-to-head, and
they have to be behind UVa in my book. But
the SU fans will have plenty to cheer about.
First, Monday they will see what happens with
basketball, and then the Cruiser Nation will
focus even more energy on lacrosse. Desko
was at the first half of the JHU-Duke game
- probably expecting a rematch in May. Impressive
win versus Loyola. (Wombat)
Georgetown: A one-goal victory over
the hapless Bruins? I am not impressed. (Artful
Dodger) #6 because, well, that's as
high as ya' get without beating any one above
you and then having a very tough time against
Brown (Go Bears!). (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
Urick's boys are good ... and lucky! (Laximus)
#7 - Undefeated, but unimpressive.
Will have trouble putting up points against
a good defense in the second half of their
schedule. (timbucthree) They're undefeated
... so what? Continually sneaking past teams
that everyone else is beating convincingly
is unimpressive. (VTD) Have some key
games coming up and need to step up their
game. (WNY Lax) Stays at #3, the only
unbeaten in D1. Three weeks in a row with
one-goal wins, the Hoyas are needing oxygen
to get through the middle of their schedule.
And it only gets tougher from here on out.
I do not expect Georgetown to stay undefeated
throughout the end of the regular season,
but I do give them credit for being undefeated
at this point. More challenges ahead with
Loyola, UMass, Rutgers, Maryland, and Syracuse.
By the end, GT should have two losses at least,
maybe more if they slip up too much. (Wombat)
North Carolina: If this team peaks
at the right time, watch out. ACC tournament
should be telling. (Artful Dodger)
Haus has brought a much needed discipline
to his alma mater, improved the defense immensely,
beat Md in College Park, and played #1 to
an OT. That buys #7 because the early losses
are still an anchor. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#6 - Virginia brings UNC back to reality.
The reality isn't that bad. The best four-loss
team in the country and significantly better
than a number of teams with fewer losses.
Young team, destined for great things. (timbucthree)
They'll have another chance at UVa
in the tournament. I like their chances in
a rematch. (VTD) Played UVa tough at
Klockner. They have regained respect they
lost with early losses. (WNY Lax) Slides
down from #7 to #8 after the UVa three-goal
loss. The 5-4 record is starting to look ugly,
but they have some easier games in their schedule
that will make it look better by the end of
April. Could use at least one win in the ACC
tourney, but with strength of schedule and
the Maryland and Duke wins under their belts,
they should be OK if they wind up with a record
of 8-5. (Wombat)
Massachusetts: Ranking them ahead of
Georgetown. They have the firepower to prevail
again in a close ECAC, but they do not dominate
at faceoff "X". (Artful Dodger) What
goes for #6 Gtown is even more so for #8 Mass,
and especially with that close game to Navy
topped off with a loss to Penn State at home.
(ColumbiaBlueBlack) #9 - A good win
over a tough and generally underrated UMBC.
(timbucthree) You know your schedule
needs fixing when UMBC is your biggest quality
win. Still, they stand at #8 because of the
talent they are supposed to have but haven't
been able to show off against a good team.
(VTD) Going to have to elevate their
game soon. (WNY Lax) UMass slides up
two notches from #9 to #7 on my list with
a solid win over UMBC coupled with losses
by UNC and Rutgers. This team will need to
beat either GT or SU to make its schedule
and results look more respectable. (Wombat)
Towson: Looks like the winner of the
CAA. Obloj must return for the Tigers to complete
their mission. (Artful Dodger) Dunno
what to make of this team. Looked wretched
early, not impressed with Tigers beating up
on a Loyola team that gave the ball away an
appalling number of times and played no D.
#10 is about right from what I've seen. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#8 - Seem to have resurrected themselves,
winning games they should, convincingly, over
the last two weeks. Picked a good time to
find themselves. (timbucthree) Coming
on strong after a very weak start. (VTD)
I have them back in the top 10. Much improved
after the first game fiasco. (WNY Lax)
Up from #14 to #11. Towson finally gets to
leap frog over some teams that were ahead
of them due to their major losses. Next, Towson
will be moving ahead of Rutgers in all likelihood,
after the Knights play Syracuse. Towson is
on a roll, so look out everyone - it is spring
and they are blooming late. Schedule isn't
too bad from here on out, and they will be
primed and ready to try and knock off JHU
at home at the end of April. (Wombat)
Rutgers: Well, I suppose it had to
happen. Rutgers may be in for some bad times
ahead. On the other hand, I consider their
season a success already. (Artful Dodger)
Bursting bubbles, back to reality,
etc., but still a good season and #9. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#11 - Army? Down 3 spots. It only gets
tougher. (timbucthree) Have to remember
that they are no longer just the hunter; they
are also the hunted. (VTD) They have
made great strides this year. (WNY Lax)
Drops two notches from #8 to #10, penalized
for the Army loss. A major reality check sets
in, and Rutgers lets one get away from them
that they would like to have back. They should
not have lost to Army at home. Next up Syracuse.
(Wombat)
Duke: Not a top 10 team. Will they
pull it out of the hat again this year? No!
(Artful Dodger) Can the Dukies really
be as terrible, awful, dreadful, etc. as they
looked against Hopkins? No real wins, lots
of losses from a #12 team that has great talent
on paper. (ColumbiaBlueBlack) Ouch!!
Losing to Hopkins by 13 points sure hurts!!
(Laximus) #10 - Duke isn't bad, Hopkins
is that good. (timbucthree) Systematically
destroyed by a much more disciplined and talented
Hopkins team. Matt Rewkowski is the one bright
spot on an otherwise pathetic season ... a
change of coaching might be in order soon.
(VTD) Needs to play a good game and
soon. Coming weeks provide ample opportunity.
(WNY Lax) Duke drops from #10 to #12
after their thrashing at the hands of the
Jays. This team looked a bit listless, and
at 7-4 they very well could finish at 7-7
and be on the bubble again, with potentially
no big wins. So they MUST WIN at least one
game during the ACC tourney, and even that
might not be enough. Winning the ACC tourney
will make them a lock, because that has been
their key to success for the past two years.
Their backs are now up against then wall.
(Wombat)
Cornell: Sputter, sputter. (Artful
Dodger) Close, unconvincing wins against
Colgate, Penn State, and Harvard. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
No losses since first eight days of
the season. (Laximus) #19 - Not last
year's Cornell team or last year's Ivies.
Beating Harvard by one goal does not help
a ranking. (timbucthree) Doing just
enough to get by. (VTD) Just not enough
weapons to be higher. (WNY Lax) One
of the biggest movers in my list this week,
up four notches from #13 to #9, giving credit
for their 6-2 record. The close win over Harvard
was not the main driver for this move up.
The main reason is that many middle of the
pack teams (Duke, Loyola, and Hofstra) got
soundly beaten last week. (Wombat)
Loyola: No quality wins. Should have
stayed in the Colonial. (Artful Dodger)
Hounds thoroughly outclassed by Syracuse as
expected, but stand-around defense and generally
wretched play against Towson must have driven
Dirrgl nuts. Put the Hounds at #13, but only
tentatively. (ColumbiaBlueBlack) #15
- This will likely turn out to be the poorest
year in a long time for Loyola. Will probably
only go 6-6. Only down from here on. (timbucthree)
They just aren't very good. (VTD)
Not enough depth this year and may be wearing
down. (WNY Lax) Down from #11 to #13,
Loyola has no quality wins to speak of - especially
now that ND lost to OSU. Their schedule is
hard from here on out, and they really need
a big win over Georgetown, Princeton, and/or
JHU. Winning two of those three would make
them a lock. Winning one might be enough,
but that would put their bubble fate in the
hands of the selection committee. (Wombat)
UMBC: Retrievers will continue to improve.
Look for some quality wins before the season
ends. (Artful Dodger) Dartmouth best
win to date. Brutal schedule over next several
weeks, but I like Donnie Z as a coach. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#12 - Down two spots with UMass loss.
Another team with an excellent future. A healthy
Andy Gallagher, and this team is in the thick
of battle for ECAC supremacy. (timbucthree)
Despite the loss, they can still contend
for the ECAC because no one is distancing
themselves as the leader. (VTD) Zim
can coach and is getting the max from his
players. Another team with not enough depth.
(WNY Lax) Down one notch on my list
from #18 to #19. Respectable showings versus
Rutgers and UMass, but two losses nonetheless.
Needs some big wins down the stretch. (Wombat)
Ohio State: Nice win over the Irish,
solid goaltending, and Curtis Smith all bode
well for a GWLL Championship. (Artful Dodger)
I thought the Buckeyes would do better
than they have. Maybe they can take the GWLL.
(ColumbiaBlueBlack) #16 - Breaks into
my top 20 for the first time since week 2
with good win over Notre Dame. (timbucthree)
An unexpected pounding of the Irish.
(VTD) ND game was what I expected before
the season started. (WNY Lax) Up from
#17 to #15, OSU is now the clear leader of
the GWLL with their critical win over ND.
Congrats Coach JB. (Wombat)
Navy: My guess is that they will continue
to sink in the polls. Back end of their schedule
will not be good to them. (Artful Dodger)
How's a team with a losing record get
ranked? By playing tough but losing to top
teams. So what's Air Force? Another Service
Academy. The Army-Navy game should be a doozie.
(ColumbiaBlueBlack) They play up and
down to the competition. If they could pick
a side, it would be easier to judge them.
(VTD) They can play anyone close. I
hope they don't start winning them in two
weeks. (WNY Lax) Navy falls from #16
to #18 on my list, and the Mids are in deep
water now. They MUST WIN THREE of their last
FOUR games to be playoff eligible, and that
would turn their current 4-5 record into a
7-6 respectable showing. The problem? That
means beating three of PSU, UMBC, JHU, and
Army. Rough waters ahead indeed. But don't
count them out. (Wombat)
Hofstra: Beat Cornell and ND. No other
reason to put them at #14. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#17 - Big loss to Towson probably ends
Hofstra season. This is not last year's team.
(timbucthree) One more loss, and they
might find themselves out of the Top 20. (VTD)
Hofstra falls from #12 to #14 and needs
some big wins down the stretch. Syracuse and
Duke could be the two that they need the most.
Pounding Duke in the season finale, at home,
may help heal the wounds from 2002. (Wombat)
Bucknell: A solid team. A win over
Army next week secures the Patriot Championship.
A loss to Army and an Army loss to Hobart
and RPI here we come again. (Artful Dodger)
Why not? (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#13 - 7-2 and playing solid ball. Midweek
victory over one of the best defensive teams
in the country (Villanova) means these guys
are for real. (timbucthree) Slowly
moving up the ladder. If they beat Army next
week they should pretty much be a lock for
the Patriot League crown. (VTD) The
Bison are the other major movers this week,
up from #20 to #16 with their solid two wins,
including one over Villanova. Bucknell is
now 7-2 and needs to beat Army this week in
a Patriot showdown. (Wombat)
Villanova: But can they beat Towson
and Hofstra. I don't think so. (Artful Dodger)
Why not? (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#14 - Close loss to Bucknell and a trouncing
of Stony Brook leaves them unchanged in my
rankings. (timbucthree) At this point,
the only hope left to unseat Towson in the
CAA. (VTD)
Notre Dame: Wait til next year. (Artful
Dodger) Early win against Carolina
discounted; big loss to OSU; unconvincing
wins against PSU and Denver. At #14 because
Loyola beat 'em. (ColumbiaBlueBlack)
#18 - It will only get worse from here on
out. Coach and team should be praying UNC
wins the rest of its games. (timbucthree)
Someone forgot to tell the leprechaun
to get out of the way of the falling Buckeye
tree. (VTD) ND falls from #15 to #17
after the OSU loss. ND is in trouble now,
but they do have a win over UNC to help them
in the at-large selection process should they
not win the GWLL. They will be rooting hard
for OSU to trip up a couple of times in the
GWLL now. Their fate may lie in their last
game of the regular season versus Maryland.
(Wombat)
Yale: #20 - 6-2 and totally unimpressive
but for win over PSU. Edges out a 4-5 Navy
for number 20 and a snake-bit PSU with 3-5
record. (timbucthree)
Dartmouth: Dartmouth breaks into my
top 20, moving from #24 to #20 with their
7-1 record that ought to be acknowledged.
Good win over Penn last week. Just missing
out this week were: #21 Penn State (up from
#23) with two solid wins vs. UMass and Hobart,
but are still only 3-5 and need to beat Navy
to break into my Top 20 (and if that happens,
Navy will fall out of my Top 20 in all likelihood).
Villanova falls to #22 from #19 after the
Bucknell loss and needs to beat Towson next
week to get back into the Top 20. Yale moves
up to #23 from #25 and is close to getting
back in but needs to beat UMass. Army moves
to #24 from #26 based on their big upset win
over Rutgers. And finally, Hobart falls four
spots to #25 from #21 after the big loss to
Penn State. Of special note is St. Joseph's
in the MAAC with a 4-1 conference record.
Have a good week. (Wombat)
Army: They do come to play, don't they!
(WNY Lax)
Penn State: With wins over UMass and
Hobart, they may be hitting their stride.
I predict a win over Navy next week. (Artful
Dodger)

Salisbury:
No question that they are #1 right now. The
score against Gettysburg was shocking. War
on the Shore seems to be only challenge left
until the tournament. (D-III) Powerful
win over Gburg. (general21111) What
can you say but wow! (minkhoo) I still
think I read the Gettysburg score wrong!!
Looks like this year could be the Gulls vs.
the Poets! (moty9) This is one of two
things I am sure of. (Richard) After
the beating they put on Gettysburg, I will
be shocked if they do not receive every 1st
place vote. (SacredLax) #1 without
a doubt. (waclaxfan) I'm not sure the
word "impressive" does this team justice.
(wolverine)
Whittier: Will people begin to forget
about this team? Here is to hoping that they
are able to put together a better schedule
next season. (D-III) Clearly a good
team, but how good? Won't know until the tournament.
(general21111) NCAA now researching
super saver fares to California. (minkhoo)
Tough to pick number two because they
are very deserving of #1! (moty9) This
is the second of two things I am sure of.
(Richard) Wish they could play some
more quality teams. (SacredLax) #2
without a doubt. (waclaxfan)
Middlebury: Brutal week coming up for
Midd; it will be a great prep for the NESCAC
and NCAA tournaments. At 5-1 Tufts, hosting
Bowdoin, and then at 6-1 Amherst in a five-day
period. (D-III) Have a suspicion they
are not quite as good as previous years. (general21111)
Amherst reschedule puts 6 NESCAC games
into a 17-day period, including back-to-back
with Lord Jeffs and Polar Bears next week.
Rest of NESCAC may be thinking this is the
chance to catch the Panthers. (minkhoo)
Loss to G'burg looks bad, but they will be
around in May. (waclaxfan) NESCAC is
theirs. Again. (wolverine)
Hampden-Sydney: A solid team but a
cut below the top two. (general21111)
Tigers looking for #1 ODAC seed. (minkhoo)
I still think this is a generous spot.
(moty9) NO BIG WINS; not too impressed.
(SacredLax) Tough call here with OWU.
(waclaxfan) W&L game should determine
ODAC supremacy. (wolverine)
Washington College: Front runner in
the Centennial, this team is looking great
right now. What happened against Naz? (D-III)
A team on the rise, but offense still
suspect. (general21111) Shoremen seem
to have found their stride. (minkhoo)
Excellent team. Early losses have been made
up for by the last two BIG wins over the Burg
and F&M. (moty9) Playing well now after
a rough start. (waclaxfan) Key wins
vs. G-burg and F&M put Washington in the Centennial
driver's seat - they still have to go through
McDaniel though. (wolverine)
Cortland: Nice wins over Naz and Hartwick,
two more tough games this week against Ithaca
and RIT. (D-III) Two nice wins this
week. (general21111) Resurgent Dragons
getting better as season progresses. (minkhoo)
Red Dragons face the Bombers this week.
Big game!! (moty9) Two all right wins
over lower top 20 teams. Injuries may hurt
them in the upcoming games (Ithaca, RIT).
(SacredLax)
Ithaca: Game against Cortland this
week will finally give us an idea of what
the Bombers are made of. (D-III) Still
largely unproven this year; big game vs. Cortland
this week. (general21111) Big test
with the Dragons this week. (minkhoo)
We will see what both teams are made of this
week. (moty9) Real big game on Wednesday.
Will they still have a hex on Cortland? (Richard)
They need the Cortland game to stay
in the Top 10. (wolverine)
Ohio Wesleyan: Struggled against a
weak Kenyon team, but they still will not
have a problem getting into the tournament.
It is not saying much about a team when the
only impressive thing about their season will
be a 4-goal loss to Salisbury. (D-III)
Schedule is lacking; no real tests until the
tournament. (general21111) Likely the
other Pool B bid. (minkhoo)
Franklin & Marshall: Coming back to
earth now? (general21111) Tough loss,
but will be a team to watch in Centennial
tourney. (minkhoo) A solid team. (waclaxfan)
Gettysburg: What happened? We will
find out just how good of a coach Janczyk
is if he can get them back on track to finish
out the regular season. (D-III) Having
an up and down year with a real tough schedule.
(general21111) Salisbury game possibly
an aberration, but it leaves the Bullets in
an iffy position for a Pool C bid if they
can't three-peat the Centennial. (minkhoo)
What is going on!?! (moty9)
15 goal differential! Will they take this
out on McDaniel? (waclaxfan) Beat Cortland
and Middlebury. Lost to W&L and Washington.
Squeaked by St. Mary's and Swat. Crushed by
Salisbury. Will the real Gburg please stand
up? (wolverine)
Washington & Lee: What is wrong with
the Generals? They will get their chance this
coming weekend against Hampden-Sydney to prove
they are still a contender. (D-III)
Struggling on offense; big game at HSC next.
(general21111) Hard team to figure
out. Seem to be under performing. (minkhoo)
Roanoke: Made believers of me; only
losses are to my top 3 teams. (general21111)
Cruising to ODAC tourney. (minkhoo)
Only real remaining test is Lynchburg,
they should win out. (wolverine)
McDaniel: Finally they play somebody
this week! I will be very surprised if they
can beat Gettysburg. (D-III) First
real test this week vs. Gburg. (general21111)
Green Terror finally ends the "preseason".
(minkhoo) This weekend against Gettysburg
will give us the details on whether McDaniel
is worth their previous inflated rankings.
(moty9) The third of three undefeated
teams belongs in the top five. (Richard)
Now we get to see them play G'Burg, F&M, and
WAC in a 10-day span! (waclaxfan) A
win vs. Gettysburg this week may not be such
an upset. (wolverine)
St. Lawrence: Stumbled against Hamilton,
but they were without one of their top players.
If they can get the Upstate AQ and Russell
returns, this will still be a team to reckon
with. (D-III) Drop w/ loss to Hamilton.
(general21111) You can't take any game
against the top 5 in the Upstate for granted.
(minkhoo)
Nazareth: Home loss to Cortland last
week. (general21111)
Clarkson: Underrated. (D-III)
Chance to move up vs. RPI. (general21111)
They keep winning. (minkhoo)
Rensselaer: Really like their name;
big game w/ Clarkson next. (general21111)
Winning close ones. (minkhoo)
A lot of close games to a lot of suspect teams!!!
(moty9)
Amherst: The Lord Jeffs need to be
very careful that they do not look ahead to
Middlebury and forget about a tough Wesleyan
on Saturday. (D-III) Needs to play
Mbury on home field. (general21111)
Schedule jams 6 games into 14 days, but most
are at home. (minkhoo)
Lynchburg: Sbury's next victim? (general21111)
Good luck with the Gulls - you're going
to need it! (wolverine)
Hartwick: Competitive with Cortland.
(minkhoo) Played a talented Cortland
team extremely tough! On the rise. (moty9)
Hamilton: Nice win against St. Lawrence
allows this team to make their debut in the
top-20. (D-III) Solid win over SLU.
But I think SLU's fairytale beginning won't
have the same type of ending. (moty9)
Personally, I do not think they are a top
20 team, but since they beat St. Lawrence,
you have to put them in the top 20. (SacredLax)
Williams: Make the top-20 because there
is no one else who deserves a spot. Weekend
was iced out; hopefully the weather turns
around soon. (D-III) Ephs may have
7 games in a 2-week period. (minkhoo)
Tufts: Gotta love those NESCAC nicknames.
(minkhoo)
Widener: Coming back after two opening
losses. (general21111)
