June 2, 2004

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Doyle Smith, whose name was synonymous with college lacrosse for more than 25 years, died Tuesday after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 60.

Smith was the associate sports information director at Virginia and for many years the executive secretary of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

Smith, who received his introduction to lacrosse while a student at Johns Hopkins, was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2000 after going into the Virginia Lacrosse Hall of Fame as one of the original 10 inductees in 1995.

Smith compiled weekly statistics and rankings for the USILA from 1973-1995 and was named USILA man of the year in 1983 and 1994. He also kept statistics for many other Virginia athletic teams, including football and men's and women's basketball.

Smith, who worked at Virginia from 1968 until his retirement in 1999, was awarded the Virginia Sports Information Directors Distinguished Service Award in 2000. He continued to attend UVa athletic events until shortly before his death.
