takes giant leap forward with Team Charlotte travel team
program

4 age group teams will provide
youth lacrosse players top level games and tournaments
Team Charlotte Lacrosse was recently formed to provide
a venue for those individuals having the desire to play
lacrosse at a higher level. Team Charlotte Lacrosse makes
available the opportunity for lacrosse players in the
greater Charlotte area to compete in regional and national
tournaments. Ultimately Team Charlotte hopes to become
a showcase for athletes who aspire to play college lacrosse.
Organizer, Mike Desmind says ot Team Charlotte Lacrosse,
“Team Charlotte is top level competition, with advanced
instruction.”
At the conclusion of the Spring season, Team Charlotte
Lacrosse will field four travel teams that will participate
in a variety of top level lacrosse contests. Team Charlotte
will play in various tournaments and events in the summer
months.
TC lacrosse is open to all students who attend school
in the greater Charlotte area or whose family resides
in Charlotte and the athlete attends boarding, military,
or a private school outside of Charlotte. On field tryouts
are scheduled for each of the TC travel squads. There
is a $5.00 per player fee to try out for the U-17, U-15
& U-13 teams (there is no tryout fee for HS varsity
candidates). Players must complete the registration
form and bring it with them to the tryout.
TC High School team. The high school varsity
team is open to all 9th, 10th & 11th graders (rising
10th, 11th & 12th) that attend high school in the
greater Charlotte area, or whose family, reside in Charlotte
and the athlete attends a boarding, military, or private
school outside of Charlotte. Varsity candidates must
be nominated by their school’s head varsity lacrosse
coach. A selection committee will then invite players
from the coach's recommendations.
While 9th, 10th, & 11th graders are eligible, the
majority of the varsity team will be juniors (rising
12 graders).
HS Under 17 team. Eligibility to tryout is determined
by your birth year. Birth years 1987, 1988 are eligible
for the U-17 team. Players may NOT turn 18 in 2004.
In general, the team will be comprised of 9th &
10th graders (rising 10th & 11th) that attend school
in the greater Charlotte area or whose family reside
in Charlotte and the athlete attends a boarding, military,
or private school outside of Charlotte.
TC Under 15 team. Eligibility to tryout is determined
by your birth year. Birth years 1989, 1990 are eligible
for the U-15 team. Players may NOT turn 16 in 2004.
In general, the team will be comprised of 7th &
8th graders (rising 8th & 9th) that attend school
in the greater Charlotte area or whose family reside
in Charlotte and the athlete attends a boarding, military,
or private school outside of Charlotte.
Tryouts. All players will be required to participate
in the team tryouts. All players must fill out and bring
with them to the tryout the registration form, along
with the $5.00 fee. The tryout is open to the general
public and TC will consider walk-on recruits for positions
on the teams.
Tryouts are held three times a year. Tryouts begin
in November for the following year’s team. There
will be an additional tryout in February and a final
tryout in June. Players must attend at least one of
the tryouts.

by your birth year. Birth years 1991, 1992 are eligible
for the U-13 team. Players may NOT turn 14 in 2004.

Tryout date & Location: SPRING 2004: Wednesday,
May 19th from and Friday, May 21st from 6:00 to 8:00
pm @ the Ballantyne YMCA lacrosse field.
Field Locations.
Commitment: Twenty-two players will be selected to
represent Charlotte.
TC Coaches and Staff. Michael Desmond is TC
Director. In addition to directing Team Charlotte Lacrosse,
Coach Desmond manages Mecklenburg Youth Lacrosse (MYL),
is the head lacrosse coach at Holy Trinity Catholic
Middle school, and is the founder and chairman of Charlotte’s
Queen City Top 50 high school all star game.
High School Team Coaches
Jamie Schmidt. Team Charlotte’s high school
head coach & midfielders coach. Coach Schmidt played
collegiate lacrosse for Potsdam University in upstate
New York., and in 1997 was named the SUNYAC “Player
of the Year” and in the same year was a North/South
collegiate All Star selection. In 1998 Coach Schmidt
was the assistant coach in the Empire State games and
currently is an elementary teacher, and middle school
lacrosse coach at Providence Day School.
Kevin Iwanuse, (attack): As a player, Kevin
Iwanusa was a two time All-American and as a junior
led all NCAA divisions in scoring while playing attack
for Pfeiffer University. For the past 5 years, Coach
Iwanuse, has served as offensive coordinator at Wingate
University, responsible for the attack. In his tenure
at Wingate, the team reached their conference finals
twice, in 2001 made the NCAA DII final four, coached
two All-Americans, and two of his attackmen earned Deep
South Conference “Freshman of the Year”
honors. In two of his seasons, the Bulldogs set school
records for wins in a season, and his most recent extra
man offense set a school record with a 41% conversion
rate.
Chris McCartan, (defense): Chris McCartan was
a three year starter at close defense for national powerhouse
Syracuse University. While at Syracuse, Coach McCartan
started for the 1995 NCAA Division I National Championship
team, and in 1998, was named team captain. After graduation
Chris coached for three seasons at Williamsville North
High School in upstate New York and played internationally
in 1999 & 2000.
Matt LeBlanc , (goaltenders): Coach LeBlanc’s
collegiate honors while at Pfeiffer University include:
1998 All American; 1997 & 1998 1st team all conference;
second in the nation (all divisions) in saves as a junior;
led his team to back to back conference championships
in ‘97 & ‘98. Coach LeBlanc, considered
one of the best goalie coaches in Charlotte, runs the
LeBlanc Goalie clinic.
U-17 and U-15 Coaches
Mike Gambrill. U-17 Head coach. A four year
starter at close defense for Division II Pfeiffer University,
Coach Gambrill was named all-conference in 1997, team
captain in his junior and senior seasons and lead Pfeiffer
to conference championships in 1996 & 1997. As a
high school player in New Jersey, Mike was selected
to play in the prestigious North South All Star Game.
Since his graduation from college in 1997, Coach Gambrill
has coached high school lacrosse in Charlotte and is
currently a varsity assistant at Charlotte Latin School.
Jack Bogwicz. U-15 Head Coach. Coach Bogwicz
was a four year starter in college, completing his career
at DIII Potsdam University. In his senior year, he was
elected captain, and helped to lead the Bears to their
first ever Empire Lacrosse League Championship and first
ECAC post season appearance. In his senior season, Bogwicz
was named the team’s defensive MVP, was a first
team all-conference selection, and was nominated for
both Division III All-Americand the prestigious Division
III North/South All-Star Game. From 1997 to 2001, Coach
Bogwicz was the assistant coach for Potsdam High School
and Potsdam University. He has worked several camps
and clinics across the east coast, and is currently
an elementary school teacher in the Charlotte Mecklenburg
School system and recently named the varsity head lacrosse
coach for the Union County Lacrosse Association.
Support Staff
Tim Price. Team Charlotte college liaison. A
former Division I head coach and current head coach
at Charlotte Latin, Mr. Price has offered to share his
expert experience of the recruiting process with Team
Charlotte players and parents. In addition to his knowledge
of the process, Coach Price has established relationships
with many top college coaches throughout the nation.
Once the Team are selected players will be responsible
for the following fees. There is a annual membership
fee is $85.00 per player. The fee includes the players
game uniform, practice field use fees, and supplemental
player insurance that coves the athlete when we practice,
scrimmage, or play at one of our facilities in Charlotte.
The uniform includes TC Game shorts, TC numbered practice/game
reversible, and a TC Under Amour shirt.
There are also Coaches fees. All TC coaches and staff
are volunteers, and are not paid. However, added to
the published tournament costs are TC coaches fees.
These fees are necessary to cover the cost of the coaches
clothing (TC hats & t-shirts), transportation to
and from events, lodging, and meals while traveling
with our teams.
There will be per event costs. After membership and
coaches fees there are additional fees for each event
as outlined on the tournament schedules. Please read
these fees carefully. In most cases, food, transportation,
and lodging are NOT included.
