High School Stadium-Greenville, DE: After an 11-10 overtime
thriller over 3rd
seed Tower Hill School (2003 State Boys Lacrosse Runnerups)
in the
quarterfinal round on Tuesday, May 25, for the second
time in the history of the boys lacrosse program, the
6th seeded Spartans of St. Marks High School advanced
to the championship round of the 2004 Delaware Interscholastic
Athletic Association Boys Lacrosse Tournament by upsetting
the 2nd seed and defending state champion Tatnall School
Hornets in a semi-final round by an 11-10 score.
This is St. Marks 2nd time in the championship round
last time was in 2002
Boys Lax Finals at Polytech High School in Woodside,
DE when they were defeated by Cape Henlopen by an 8-4
score.
In the fourth quarter, with Tatnall up 9-6 on Alex
Moeckel's goal unassisted
at 6:13, the Spartans answered on goals by 1 each by
Curt Simmons and Chris
Valentine, 2 by Derek Sherman to tie the game at 9-9.
St. Marks went ahead 10-9
as Kevin Finnegan scored unassisted at 1:57. Alex Moeckel
answered back on
an unassisted goal with 40 seconds left to tie the game
at 10-10. In overtime,
St. Marks won the faceoff as Mick Lynch looked for Kevin
Finnegan for the
winning score at 2:53 to make the final score St. Marks
11 Tatnall 10.
"It was a huge win for us today in defeating Tatnall,
the play that we used
for the score my teammate Derek Sherman used a pick
looked for Mick Lynch as he fed me the ball and once
when Tatnall goalie (Ted Shea) slipped I had an open
net moved around the goal for the winning score."
said Kevin Finnegan. "It
was an awesome win for our squad last time we played
Tatnall we were defeated
but today we played with all of our hearts."
"This was a huge win for our guys as we scored
6 goals in the 4th quarter vs.
Tatnall which was very unbelivable." said St. Marks
Head Coach Curt Sawyer.
"The difference today then we played Tatnall during
the regular season is
that in the first period we gave up 4 goals and switched
man to man." "We stayed
with them for 3 quarters, our offense starting turning
on in the 4th as we
got back the pressure off the faceoffs, Dan Mangat our
faceoff specialist won 5
out of 8 faceoffs which was the difference." "Justin
Scheinholtz our goalie
kept us in the game as Tatnall pulled away for us. "On
the overtime goal, we
won the faceoff off the loose ball outlet Eddie Tyczkowski
picked up the ball
for us, fed to Mick Lynch and looked for Kenny Finnegan
for the score." "Our
next mission is to play St. Andrews as they upset the
top ranked Riders of
Caesar Rodney by a 8-2 score, they have a good squad
with a solid defense, good
midfielders and a great goalie."
