Cattrano Denies Pride in New Jersey Debut

Week 4 Box Score

MONTCLAIR – There was a reason the Philadelphia Barrage traded the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 collegiate draft to get goalie Greg Cattrano. Through the team’s first three games, there were some skeptics who doubted the former Brown netminder.

To the chagrin of the record crowd of 3,024 at Montclair State University’s Sprague Field, Cattrano silenced the critics, making 23 saves and leading the Barrage to a 15-12 win over the Pride in the team’s home opener.

The game was the first for the Pride at newly renovated Sprague Field at MSU, and much like the Pride did to Philadelphia on May 22 of this year, the Barrage ruined the Pride’s debut in their new venue.

“We came out very flat and dug ourselves a hole we could never get out of,’’ said Pride head coach Ted Georgalas.

The hole in question was a 7-0 Barrage lead in the first quarter, as Philadelphia peppered goalie Trevor Tierney from every angle. The Barrage scored nine times in the first quarter to take a 9-2 lead into the second.

The Pride never made a charge until the fourth quarter, when Scott Urick and Nick Schmidt scored goals to bring the team to within three. A costly turnover never got the Pride any closer, though, and the Barrage walked off the field with their first win.

“We needed to play better,’’ said Georgalas. “When you get behind a team, any team, like that, it is going to be very difficult to get back in the game.’’

The Pride were led by Jesse Hubbard, who tallied his MLL leading 34th hat trick of his career. Rookie Walid Hajj, making his first appearance in Major League Lacrosse, tallied twice and assisted on another goal.

Peter Vlahakis and Eric Wedin also played their first game in Pride uniforms, and the pair took all the team’s face-offs. The pair won 16-of-29 draws to keep the team closes, but in the end they could not penetrate Cattrano.

“He is a very good goalie,’’ Georgalas said. “When he is on, he is tough to beat, and today he was on.’’

The Pride travel to Rochester to take on the Rattlers this coming Friday, June 18 at 7 p.m.
