Rattlers get first win in Baltimore
June 14, 2004
Democrat and Chronicle
(June 14, 2004) — The Baltimore Bayhawks have never
been kind to the Rochester Rattlers.
The Bayhawks had won 10 of 11 games — including
eight straight — and had never lost at home against
the Rattlers coming in to Sunday afternoon’s game.
Help has arrived.
Tillman Johnson made his first professional start in
goal for the Rattlers as Rochester defeated Baltimore
14-12 at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University.
Johnson, the 2003 NCAA Goalie and Player of the Year
at the University of Virginia, was stellar for the Rattlers,
making 22 saves, including nine in the fourth quarter
to stifle the Bayhawks’ comeback attempt.
The Rattlers (2-2) are tied with Baltimore for first
place in the National Division. Rochester’s only
other win against the Bayhawks was July 29, 2001, at
Frontier Field.
The game started as a duel between goalies. Johnson
made five saves and Bayhawks rookie goalie Mike Levin
of Pittsford stopped six shots as the score was 1-1
after the first quarter.
The Rattlers dominated play in the second, scoring
four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead to open the quarter.
Brent Rothfuss of Penfield, making his Rattlers debut
after being acquired from Boston a week ago, scored
twice in the quarter and the Rattlers had an 8-4 lead
at the half.
Nate Watkins scored a 2-point goal to begin the third
quarter as the Rattlers had a 10-4 lead. The Bayhawks
fought back with two goals of their own, but Ryan Powell
scored twice at the end of the third to give Rochester
a 12-6 lead.
The Bayhawks scored four goals to begin the fourth
quarter, but the teams traded goals the rest of the
way.
The Rattlers play New Jersey at 7:30 p.m. Friday at
Bishop Kearney.
