IRONDEQUOIT, NY – There is a fire in Pride goalie Trevor Tierney’s eyes. It is an undying desire to give everything he has in the game of lacrosse, and if that means protecting his teammates, so be it.

After a high hit that left Pride middie Matt Alexander horizontal, a scrum occurred, and when all was said and done, Tierney was given a game misconduct – though no one from Rochester was given the gate.

After a stellar defensive effort that saw trhe Pride give up only six goals in the final 39 minutes, Rochester walked out of Bisshop Kearney Field, a 17-11 winner.

“We got behind again and we just couldn’t put the balls in the net in that third quarter,’’ said Pride head coach Ted Georgalas. “Tillman Johnson was excellent in the second half, which is unfortunate for us.’’

In the second half as the Pride dominated face-offs thanks to rookie Peter Vlahakis (who won 22-of-31 draws) Johnson stepped up. In total, Johnson made a Major League Lacrosse record 31 saves.

The melee in the second quarter started when Regy Thorpe grabbed Alexander by the back of the jersey, lifting him into the air as his body appeared limp. The teams then came to blows and Tierney found himself on the wrong end of the officials’ call.

The teams came out and exchanged goals to start the game, but a rash of turnovers and defensive lapses forced the Pride into another early hole, 11-4. It was that same score at 8:56 of the second quarter when the violence erupted.

Tierney has been involved in other scrums with Rochester in the past.

In 2002, Tierney was inserted into the game when then goalie Steve Koudelka was penalized in a fight, which left him in a 6-on-2 situation.

Yesterday's game went to the half 12-6 in favor of Rochester, though Tierney’s ejection seemed to motivate his teammates, as the Pride fired in a pair of man-up goals to end the half.

David Curry canned a two-point shot to pull the Pride to within six, but the team never got closer than that number.

Curry netted a Pride high four goals and added an assist for a total of six points, which includes his 2-pointer. Jesse Hubbard was held without a hat trick for the first time this season, and had two goals.
