MLL Question of the Day: Jon Hess, How
do you see the field so well?
July 8, 2003
from Dan of Emmaus, PA
Hey, Jon Hess, what are some things
you do that allow you to see the field so well and not
get your passes picked off?

Good question Dan!
While you would assume that the best way to find an
open man would be to watch your offensive players first
and the defensive players second, I typically watch
the defenders and watch my offensive teammates out of
the corner of my eye. By watching the off-ball defenders,
it allows you to recognize when they are truly out of
position, or when they aren't looking to pick off the
passes.
So, I will usually stare at how the defenders are playing
on the crease, and if it looks like they are going to
be out of position, I'll fire the ball into the offensive
player that is cutting in that area. You obviously can't
do all of this if your head is down, so I also advise
you to always keep your head up watching, with OR WITHOUT
the ball.
