Brian Voelker: Most effective check;
when to use it
June 26, 2003
Hey, Brian Voelker, what do you
think is the most effective check used in lacrosse? What
is the proper way to execute this check?
from Michael E. of Orlando, FL
Brian Voelker:
Good question Michael,
I am not a huge fan of take-away checks. The attackmen
in the MLL are too smart to fall for most take-away
checks and they usually end up making you pay if you
miss.
If it's late in the game and we need the ball back
though, I do have a couple of favorites that I like
to use. First, the "slapcheck." With this
check you time the rhythm of the attackman's cradle
so that when he brings it forward you "slap"
your stick across his chest and take the ball away.
The second is the "fake over the head" check.
You fake like you are going over the attackman's head
with your stick. When he brings his stick forward, you
chop down in front of his face and catch his stick in
front of his body.
